Internet Explorer Will Not Connect To Web

Hi all,

I'm running IE 6 (and XP) and a month or two ago, it just stopped connecting to the web. When I try to open it, I just got the 'the page cannot be displayed' page. I was in and out of town so I needed some functionality so i downloaded and am using Firefox right now. Today I decided to try and tackle the issue and downloaded IE 7. But, once it was installed, I have the same situation, and get the same page. Interesting thing was that before I did the IE 7 download, I tried to uninstall 6. When I went to control panel/ add remove, IE 6 (actually any IE) was not on the program list. So, I continued by selecting the 'add/remove windows components' page. And I just unchecked Internet Explorer. The icon disappeared from my desktop. But that was the only thing I could find to remove 6. So, after it not working also, I decided to just uninstall 7 and get back to where I was. But, IE 7 DID show up on the 'add/remove programs' list, whereas IE 6 had not been there. Now, per the IE 7 uninstall utility, when 7 was gone, it did bring back 6 and I'm back where I started with no connectivity. Anyone have any ideas? Also, I'm not sure if this is related but with Firefox, I'm having lots of occurrences where a number of emails from various sites will not ope, with me getting a lot of boxes with red x's in them. This also happens on some websites I go directly to. Thanks.

I have just tried running IEFix as suggested above on my wife's DELL inspiron 4000 laptop which has ME installed and is fitted with a NETGEAR wireless card WG511that provides a confirmed wireless connection via a BT HOMEHUB through a DG834 NETGEAR router which also has a desktop computer connected by cable working perfectly but IEFix is not recognised by WINDOWS.  The problem is although with very dillgent and painstaking assistance of NETGEAR technicians have helped me with the the laptop internet connection which has been proved by several successful PING test no connection with IEX is established.  Clicking on the launcher with GOOGLE set as the home page results in a message at the bottom of the screen 'Connecting to site 209.85.229.105 but the hour glass sticks and no page is displayed.  It seems the computer is prevented from using the wireless link that has been established.  May I have advice on how to deal with that please?

Hi Chip

Please try following:

1.

start > run > cmd> enter >

type "ipconfig /all"

write down IP of default gateway

then ping default gateway (ex:  ping 192.168.0.1)

see if you get reply, and if you do, its problem with browser.

2.

try to download and install Firefox using another computer and install it on your  computer, to see if its problem with IE.

3.

try to connect your computer directly with ethernet cable into your router, then try surf web.

4.

reset router using small hole on back of router, and then re-configure it again.

many times it helps.

In IE, go to Tools and open Internet Options.  Go to the connections tab, then click LAN Settings.  See image:

Then make sure all the boxes on the next window are unchecked and that nothing is entered in the address and port fields.  If there's something there now, write it down in case your wife needs that for her work connection...  See image but pretend that everything is unchecked:

Thank you.  No address is given for default gateway.  DHCP is enabled - whatever that means.

The NETGEAR WIZARD reports that there is an internet connection.

What do I need to do?

This morning pinging various sites was 100% successful but stil IEX does not work.  When I tried to install Firefox it failed.  The error message was 'Setup has caused anin SETUP EXE settup will now close.

Any answers will be very helpful I am sure.

Either reboot your computer or do the following:

start > run > cmd> enter >

type "ipconfig /renew"

After that, check to see if you now have a default gateway.

Freddy Crabbe,

Let's try the simple thing. Try using  Mozilla Firefox and see if it connects.

Open Internet Explorer, click on tools, manage add-ons, enable, disable add-ons. Disable all the add-ons. Close Internet Explorer. Wait 30 seconds, then open Internet Explorer, what happens?

If using a 64-bit system, there are two versions of Internet Explorer. Click start, in search type Internet. You should see three versions of Internet Explorer. Use the one that does not have (64-bit) after it.

Can you give us the brand name and model of your router?

January 20th, 2010 03:00

Its a NETGEAR DG 834 v2 ROUTER about three years old and as far as I concerned is working perfectly.  I am sure the fault lies in the settings of the DELL inspiron which when purchased was only setup and configured for dial up networking.  There is no reference I can find to wireless networking so perhaps this laptop does not have the capability although I was assured by a technician who took it away to his company workshop that it was working there on a wireless network but he was no able to make it work here even though my sons in law used the same setup over Christmas to link their computers an telephones to the web.

alright..

to be on safe side please try to do the following first:

1. reset your IE settings to default

use this nice guide: http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-reset-internet-explorer-6-to.html

*later version of IE have very similar options, just look for "default" button.

2. see if you get IP address starting with 169.x.x.x from "ipconfig".

if you do, please follow this guide to try to solve this

http://kb.resnet.purdue.edu/print.php?articleid=1385

3. from what i see, NETGEAR DG 834 doesnt have wireless function.

do you have another "access point" or router with wireless?

if you are refering to NETGEAR DG 834G (which has wireless) then, please read following:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/112

and try to temporary disable wireless security and try to connect.

if it works, setup security level that works best with your laptop.

i recommend WPA-PSK

Thank you,

I am sorry for the incomplete information.

The laptop's wireless link is via a BT Homehub which has a wired connection to the DG834 router, which, as you correctly state, is not a wireless router.  I have a desktop connected to that, giving me the broad band link so I have two wire connections to the DG834, one for the Homehub, and the other for the desktop computer.  The BT homehub has worked perfectly well even though it has not been setup by any BT software.  It is recognised by the NETGEAR wireless card which reports there is a 100% signal strength.  NETGEAR technicians proved yesterday by pinging numerous addresses that all was fine, but as you have established, the gateway address is missing, which may be my fault as I removed some of the DELL facilities that seemed surplus to requirements.

in order to disable using dialup conenction please do following:

open IE > tools > internet options > connections >  mark "never dial a connection" > press ok > restart IE

January 20th, 2010 05:00

Following the instructions for resetting IEX results in an address for DELL but the computer is preprogramed for dialup connections which I am not using.  Is this the source of the trouble?  If so how can I bypass that?
