Internet not detected via Ethernet
Hi folks.
I recently reformatted my Inspiron 2200. After reformatting, I reinstalled the drivers neccesary for the Ethernet port to work (from Dell.com), and according to Device Manager, nothing is wrong with it. When I plug it in though, a message says that I have "limited or no connectivity". When I click repair, it goes for a few minutes, then a message appears which says "IP Address could not be renewed." I have tried plugging it in straight from the modem directly to the computer, but that doesn't work either.
However, WiFi does work. But, the WiFi router I have is a friend's, and he wants it back soon. Instead of getting another router, I'd rather just use Ethernet (right now, I have the only computer in the house, there's no need for wireless).
Any ideas?
Thanks

when you plug the cat5 cable into your notebook do the LEDs come on on either side of the port ?

I've tried plugging it into a Modem-to-Router-to-Port setup, that didn't work; but neither did directly from the modem to the computer.
Yes, the LEDs light up and it tries to connect, but can't. It even lists the speed as 100 Mbps.

Do you have a firewall running on the computer? If so, is the network port blocked and/or the modem (or router) trusted? Have you tried setting a fixed IP address, connecting direct to the router, and testing to see if you can view the router config page?

What make and model is your router ?
I take it you are using Windows XP ?
Dumb question.. but have you tested the cable from your router to the computer ? Seeing that it works with wireless but not with cable, Try a new cable and see if it works.

I turned Windows firewall off, clicked repair, and the same thing happened. I connected directly from the modem to port, nothing happened.
How do you set a fixed IP address, and/or test using the router config page?

What happens if you open up a comand prompt and do an ipconfig?
start
run box, type cmd hit enter
type ipconfig/release
then wait for results
then type ipconfig/renew
wait for results...let us know what they are
also make sure your ip address is set for automatic
start
run type ncpa.cpl hit enter
highlight network card
right click network card
click properties
highlight tcp/ip click properties
should be on obtain ip address auto

The router is a D-Link DES-1105. The modem is a Ambit U10CO18.
Windows XP Pro it is.
IPConfig results are: "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection. Unable to contact your DHCP server.
Request has timed out."
TCP/IP properties are on auto obtain.
Tried a different cable, that didn't work either.

My answer may be totally off base and I am sure the experts will soon correct me if wrong lol..
But appears the D-Link DES-1105 you have is a switch and not a router. A switch can not assign multiple IP's. A router can assign multiple IP's and in your case it looks like the IP is already assigned to the wireless connection.
I would try clearing all config/data/etc.. for the wireless connection and then try and reconnect.
