internet page display is small - will not fill wide screen

I have an inspiron e1505, can anyone tell me if they have the same or similar problem. When we open internet explorer to our home page, sandiego.cox.net  the screen only fills the center of the monitor. I have a 15.4 wide screen and it only fills about 7" in the center of the monitor, with a 3" white border on both the left and right side. Is this the way laptops are? Is it the wide screen? Dell hasn't been able to answer my problem any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That is the way the web page is designed.  There is nothing you can do about it.

Just like in a tv with a 16:9 aspect ratio, if the program you are displaying is not wide screen then you get blank screen on both sides, that is what you are seeing for web pages.  They are made for a 4:3 ratio (a square screen)
