Internet Speed Slow

Question

Hi - Three of our computers (info below) that were purchased at the same time have begun experiencing very slow speeds on the Internet. We have a DSL modem (Bellsouth) - some of the machines are plugged into a router (d-link) and mine is plugged into the Bellsouth Netopia wireless modem directly (so can't be the router.) The problem only manifested after we upgraded from 1.5mbps to 6.   Bellsouth came out and spent over 2 hours here this morning and we were able to rule out: modem, router, wiring, etc. In fact, we unhooked the ethernet cable from my machine an connected it to their laptop and there was no issue. Oddly, when you do a speed check on any of the machines they show a near 6mbps speed - however, the pages do not load and display anywhere near that (nearly 30 seconds in some instances to display a full simple page like a news articel on Yahoo, for example). So, it's getting to the machine exactly as it should just not performing as it should once there.   I am somewhat knowledgeable and have checked all the settings that I know and don't see anything obvious. I have also tried the basics of clearing temp Internet files, deleting cookies, rebooting (everything of course) to no avail. One thing of note, on the three computers, we are using three different browsers all with same issue (so, doubt it's an IE, Netscape, etc. setting - though could be possible still I suppose.)   Is it possible there is some sort of setting that is inhibitng the faster speed and the way the PC negotiates this?   Here is my computer info (of the other machines - one is exactly the same config, the other has 512K).   Here is my machine info:   Dell Optiplex 170L Celeron 2.4GHZ 256K RAM   Another note - the thought of too little RAM crossed my mind, but we have a Compaq that is much older and running only 128K and not experiencing this slow down. Go here and download the tcp optimize and run it , it will reconfigure everything for you. To copy in the cmd window, right click in the top bar and Edit, Select All, then do it again, except copy will now be available. Hi Mombodog - Thanks very much for your reply. For some reason, though it certainly changed settings, it still doesn't work - I am at a loss! Could it be the RAM (256k) limiting things? I did another speed check and it's reading at nearly 6mbps - but there is no way that it is rendering that quickly - still takes 15-20 seconds to open most web pages.

Are you using a VPN for your connection to the internet, if so this is the cause.

Hi Mombodog - thanks again for the response. Now, I am going to sound very thick. I don't think that we are using a VPN - but, I can't tell exactly. How do I check and disable/change that if it is the case? I was looking at the network adapters and noticed that there are two TCP/IP connections on the general tab of the LAN properties. Here are all of them, in order (could there be a conflict of some sort?):   - Client Service for NetWare - Client for Microsoft Networks - File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks - Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 - NWLink NetBIOS - NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Proto... - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)   It's an 'Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection'   Thanks! There is a VPN installed Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface= VPN Also TCP/IP V6 is installed, that is what Teredo uses to tunnel the VPN. I cannot tell you how to remove it, but suggest you get someone knowlegeable in this area to help you. It is probably part of Netware. Typically you do not want TCP/IP V6 installed along side TCP/IP V4, this can cause problems. TCP/IP V4 is the current protocol used to connect to the internet. Removing TCP/IP V6 should clear up your problem but will break the VPN.   The clients below are ususally not found on Home PC's and can be removed unless they are there for a specific reason.   - Client Service for NetWare - Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 - NWLink NetBIOS - NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Proto...   Also check Tools/Internet Options, Connections Tab, Lan settings button, there should be No configuration present here (No boxes Ticked)
