Internet via inspiron 1501

Question

I have an Inspiron 1501 Laptop. I have a US Robotics 8054 Router and broadband internet. i have a desktop and a second laptop with wireless cards with connect to internet via router fine.My new laptop will not. It identifies the router but when I click on connect it says its connecting to network but then just stops? any ideas

Is it failing to obtain an ip address? What wireless card does your new laptop have? Are you letting windows configure the card or the wireless card software configure it? Is your network secured or an open connection? Is the firewall maybe blocking access? You should start here and maybe post back with the ip address after doing this.   Pull the power on the modem and router. Wait 2 minutes or so. Power the modem. After it powers fully then power the router. When it powers fully then try to connect wireless. If the ip address cannot be found then select start and then run.  Type in cmd and hit enter. Type in ipconfig /release and enter. Then type in ipconfig /renew and then enter. The ip address should to renew. If id does try wireless again.

Wireless card is the 1390, network is secure and I have tried putting the WEP in. I have also tried turning the router/modem off and restarting it. Firewalls are all off. My WIFI card is finding the router but when it tries to conenct to the net,it says there is no connection to the internet????

Ok, there is an urgent update for this 1390 card that you should do and it may correct your problem. This is for windows XP but I didn't look to see what all OS it is for. I will do that also to make sure it's for all OS. I am pretty sure it is as this is for the card.

Looks like your laptop does have XP. So if so d/l that update and maybe print out the installation instructions.

I am having an identical problem with a brand, spanking-new 1501 running XP Pro with the 1390 wireless mini card. I have a D Link DI-634M wireless router that works fine with my other Dell laptop. I downloaded the driver update for the 1390 as suggested in the Forum thread but that seems not to have solved the problem: the laptop connects to the network but is stuck "acquiring network address." It connects fine via ethernet.

I ran IPCONFIG and got no Default Gateway information for the wireless network connection. IP Address and Subnet Mask were both 0.0.0.0.

I tried Dell Tech Support, somewhere in call center land, and was connected with someone who I could barely hear over all the background noise. After 15 minutes on the phone the line went dead--no great loss, as we were getting nowhere.

This seems to be a Dell issue. Any more ideas?

I now have to own up: this wasn't a Dell issue. Norton Internet Security didn't recognize the network as secure and wasn't granting acess, and also wasn't notifying me. So I fixed that with Norton--which I plan to replace--and now things seem to be working okay.

You may need to power down the modem and router. Wait a couple minutes and power the modem first. Once fully powered then power the router. Then run cmd andenter ipconfig /release. Then type ipconfig /renew. See then if it will give you an ip address. If not then you need to go to your router setup and make sure it is setup properly and the mac address is disabled. Hi, I have a similar problem. I´m owner of a Inspiron 1501, Win XP home at spanish (I´m from Mexico). My card is a 1390. I can´t connect to an ad hoc net. This is secure. It seems like is connected, but don´t send packages so it´s not connected to internet. I´m using the Card´s tool for configuring the connection.   Can you help me with this? I was reading your previous answers, how can i power down my modem?

Well, you may have other settings problems also. But to power down the modem just unplug it and also unplug the router. Then do this: Wait 4 minutes or so. Power the modem. (Plug in in) After it powers fully then power the router (Plug it in). When it powers fully then try to connect wireless. If the ip address cannot be found then hit start and select run then type in cmd and hit enter. Type in ipconfig /release and enter. Then type in ipconfig /renew and then enter. The ip address should to renew. If id does try wireless again.   You may want to try and let windows cofigure the card if you cannot get the router software to do it. Also, if you have a firewall it may be blocking access to the internet. Try turning it off if so.

Well, in fact I don´t have any router. Just i have for my use an ad hoc network, the firewalls are disabled. Right, the computer can´t get an IP adress, I will try to do that you said. I wish this can to resolve my problem, in other case, Do you have any adittional sugestion?   Thanks

Ok, Sounded like you had a router and a wireless card. Go ahead and power the modem down and then after say 4 minutes power it back up and then if no connection do the part where I said release and renew the ip address. That usually does it. Also, in network properties select TCP/IP properties and make sure you have obtain IP Address set to automatic.
