Internet will not open (Inspiron 1100)

Question

Help!!! My computer stopped letting me access the internet. A sign always comes up, something like "internet explorer has to close, sorry for the inconvience".But oddly enough the messenger still works.

My dial-up connection is good, I have another computer that still works using it. I've tried downloading updates, thinking that might patch whatever is wrong. I wanted to reload everything, but xp seems to not want me to do that.

Not sure why IE is stopping on you - have you scanned for a virus?  To reload things, save off your critical email, docs, files, etc., and boot to the XP cd, choose to remove all partitions, make a partition, format, then load XP.  Do the XP updates from Microsoft after using the Downloads tab above to get the latest driver/chipset support drivers.

hi john i did scan for a virus and i found something called 'new Malware'. does that mean anything to you? i'll try your suggestions. thanks for your help. jen

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/M/malware.html You are being hijacked by spyware.  Go here and get AdAware (free version is fine) and look for Spybot - use them both to rid yourself of these parasites.
