Internet will not open on Dell laptop

Question

My son's laptop will not connect to the internet. The network (lan and wireless) say it is enabled and functioning properly - other pcs in the house work fine. It tries to connect, but says it cannot display the web page. When I run diagnose the problem, the response is that the problem is with the host website. He usually uses Google Chrome, but I set the default to IE and it is still not working.

A couple of things. Is there a reason this was not upgraded to Windows 7 SP1?

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapters, 1397 network adapter, advanced. Look and see if this has Antenna diversity. If it has it, chage it from Auto to Aux, then restart the computer.

This is my kid's computer and your asking me why it wasn't upgraded? I would think it would upgrade automatically, but we will do it once we get reconnected. We changed the diversity antenna to aux. Still no internet pages will open.

The other information that might be useful is that he last connected on a LAN at another house with a different ISP.

Just thinking, while the wind is blowing outside.

Here are places to look to see if Connection is enabled FN and F2, F2 and some have a switch to turn on the wireless adapter. Usually when you connect with an ethernet adapter, it disables the wireless adapter. You can have one or the other.

If you had any power flickers and/or power outages, Power off the ISP modem/router and the wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer, then try to connect.

Start, control panel, Internet options, connections, LAN settings.

Check the box, automatically detect settings.

Also try start, control panel, network and sharing center, troubleshooting problems. See if windows can repair the problem.

The connection was already on auto detect and windows troubleshoot didn't offer any help. My son said he knew about the wireless button and he knows that it is on since wireless conections are showing up.

Sometimes when drivers become corrupt or missing, you'll see yellow exclaimination marks or red x's in the device manager.

Start, control panel, networking and sharing center, click on your connection, click on properties. Look at TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6 and make sure the setting match the ones I have below. This adapter might not have the TCP/IPv6.

The settings matched your recommendation.  Although when we went to the status screen, it says the IPv6 Connectivity has no internet access.   On the same window, the IPV4 Connectivity says 'Internet'.

IPVv6 is new and most connect to IPVv4 networks.

Take the computer next to your wireless router and try to connect. Can you see the network and connect?

What virus protection do you have installed? Have seen some virus programs disable the connection with expired virus definitions.

Scan for malware? Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on another computer and put it on a flash drive or cd, then install it on the computer. See if it finds anything.

The last thing is to chack the Winsock.

I have used WinSock XP Fix, it also works for Windows 7 but after you click fix, it also gives an error message.

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

If these things don't work, the I would try cotacting Dell. It should be under warranty.

This is for printers but should get you in the right area to change the settings.

Allowing Printer past McAfee

1. Open the McAfee Security Center and then click on the ‘Internet and Network’

2. To the right of ‘Internet and Network’ you would see all the services that are present under it, just below that you would have a button ‘Configure’ please click on that.

3. Now you would have the Internet and Network Configuration, in this window you would have an option ‘Firewall Protection in Enabled’ to the right of that you would have a downward arrow, click on that.

4. Then click on the ‘Advanced’ button which would have a new screen up.

5. To the left of that window you would have ‘System Services’ click on it and to the right pane of the window you would have the ports listed.

6. Please check the option which is for ‘Windows File Sharing’ then click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘Ok’

7. Restart the computer
