ipconfig /release or renew - fail (adapter is not in a state to perform that command)
I am trying to trouble shoot a wired network problem.
I know my internet connection is good as I am able to switch the cable to another computer (in fact, the one I am typing this with) and it works.
However, my Dell dimension is having a problem with it. I have tried everything.
I reinstalled the ethernet card.
I even went as fas as buying a new network card and it still does not work.
I am making a connection, but no packets are being transferred.
There seems to be a problem with the software.
When I type in ipconfig /release or /renew I get a message that says the adapter is not in a state to perform that command.
ipconfig /flushdns does work however.

What are you connecting to (directly to a cable or dsl modem, to a router)? If directly to the modem, which kind is it (cable or dsl)?

Hi,
Just to share with you,
I got the same message for one of my systems which I later figured out that it wasing using "static" IP address instead of dynamic IP address.
I am not sure if that is your situation.

I am using a direct ethernet connection to a cable modem. No router.

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Hi,
Base on your information, you don't have valid Default Gateway and DNS server, which could very well be the problem.
I'd suggest you to call ISP first for how to properly connecting a PC directly to cable modem without a router in between, as it may require some configurations.

I ran the fix winsock registry update utility, but it did not have the desired effect.
I reran ipconfig /all and here is the result.
