is this a common prob?
hi
i was hoping if someone could help me solve this prob.
my laptop can share files with desktop, but
my desktop cannot share files with my laptop.
both can ping each others ip address and i have disabled all the secuirty programs.(including windows firewall)
(using a router for internet connection)

it shows me this message... ( \\ipaddress) is not accesible. You might not have permission to access this netowork resource. Contact the administator of this server to find out if u have access permissions. Access is denied.
both are on XP home edition.

Yes, this a very common problem and is almost always due to imporperly configured firewalls. On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.

Then you have no third party firewalls installed on either computer, as volcano11 inquired?
Then, let's try this...click on Network Places on your desktop computer? Then " View Workgroup Computers" Does your laptop computer appear in the window?

Congratulations! Now, in a previous reply you stated that you have disabled all firewalls on both computers... For security purposes, you need to enable and configure one firewall on each computer.

True, but considering the info that a lot of people keep on their computers, can you ever really be to vigilant?
