Laptop does not see my wireless signal -- HELP!

Hello,

We just moved from DSL to cable modem in my house and could not be happier. That stuff is FAST!

However, we lost our wireless access when we made this move. The installer said we could buy a wireless cable router and have our wireless access back. So I purchased and set up a linksys wrt54g broadband wireless router.

My desktop works like a champ -- email and web access, no problem. However, my laptop shows no connection -- it auto detects when I'm at school, but it is not auto detecting this new setup.

FYI: the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400 runnings windows xp; the desktop is also running xp; I created a WEP encryption key in the linksys setup and I know the laptop will need this number, however, I can't get the laptop to even see the wireless signal.

What am I doing wrong and how do I fix this so I can access wirelessly from my home?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

On your router is SSID broadcasting enabled?  If not, then enable it.

Okay,

Steve motivated me to poke around in my settings of the linksys router. I found a button (under the heading of wireless setup) that indicated "status disabled." I pushed this button and a screen popped up saying it was negotiating for clients. The lights on the front of my linksys router when crazy (lots of blinking) and now the status of the button in the setup screen reads, "SES negotiating."

What did I do?? Was it good??

HELP!

steve,

Never mind about how to adjust the SSDI settings -- I found them under the setup area of my linksys -- it says that this feature is enabled.

Now what?

I don't have a router, I am just supposed automatically connect to their free wireless here at the hotel.  The only time I get a signal is when I am on top of their router and stuff, but as soon as I walk away, i lose the signal.  Do I need a stronger card or do they need a stronger signal?

Help! My only other option here is dialup and I cant work with that - my kind of work it would take all day.

Can anyone help?

This is a top of the line Dell laptop built in 2006 and is loaded- what am i doing wrong?
