Laptop "forgets" how to share printer after restart.

I have:

HP Pavilion desktop with XP SP3

HP 932C Deskjet Printer attached to HP desktop

Dell Inspiron 1420 with Vista SP1

Linksys WiFi

I can get the laptop printing with no problem using the local port method.  \\Desktop\HPDJ  Using the printer wizard, I run into the 0X000003E3 driver conflict error, and HP is no longer supporting the printer.  However, when I shut down the laptop, the local port I defined disappears, and I have to recreate it, and then reset the printer to "Use Online."  I can do that in 20 seconds after a lot of practice, and it is only necessary once a day when I need to print, but it would be nice to make that port sticky. 

Any idea why it's getting erased, and how to fix it?  The network and desktop are already up when I boot the laptop.
