The security type and encryption type are what is set up on the router.  You will have to log in to your router's configuration utility to find out what they are.

Since the security features are set on the router, those on the network adapter have to be the same as those set up on the router or it will not connect.   In other words, the security settings on the router have to match those on the network adapter.  If no security is set on the router, then you have to tell the network adapter to connect with no security.

I believe that is 192.168.1.1 and choosing the Security Tab?  I don't see how this gives me the info I need to make changes to my laptop?  FIrewall Protection is Enabled w/ 3 out of 4 boxes chosen.  Does that possibly mean I don't select anything on my laptop and it takes from the router?

thanks for the info.  it seems i have the info correct but not the Network Security Key which is a password.  Is this the password on the router?  If I don't know what it is can I manually change it on the router?

i did find the the Security Key but it is not workiing on my laptop.  Any ideas?

What kind of security do you have set (WEP or WPA)?

 

If all else fails, you can do a reset on the router to return it to its default settings (default SSID, default username and password, security disabled).  This is usually accomplished by pressing and holding for 10 seconds the reset button on the back of the router.  It may be different for your router so consult the user manual.   If you do this, then you can log back in and change all of the default values to what you had before and enter a new key that you will remember.
