Linksys WRT610N Question(s)

It will depend on how you set up the router. I have one ssid setup for the 5 gig band and one for the 2.4 gig band. Then when i select a SSID I choose the one in the band i want. Both bands are on all the time and need to be setup like  seperate routers.

I use the same security settings on each band. The only difference is which ssid I choose.

If you are running Vista open up network connection and then click on the status A small box will pop up and will tell you the speed you are running at.

Dave, thanks for the response.  I am running Vista Home  Premium, but I have found no "status" icon, button, or other symbol .  I have looked all over the place.  The only reference to "status" is the "status tool bar" found within the "Tools" dropdown.  But no such status choice could I find tlhere.

Also, re the router sertup:  I never saw any choices offered on bands nor were bands even mentioned during the process.  I am amazed I was able to get the basic network connection working.  I have owned PCs since the old DOS days, but just now getting into the wireless world with the recent purchase of a laptop.  I have spent hours trying to find such basic info in the user guide with no luck.  I have seen my share of less than spetacular user's guides over the years, but the Linksys one wins my top award for making it difficult to impossible to find even the simplest setup procedures.

Open the Network and sharing program under control panel. Once open click on the view status. Pay attention to the reported speed. If you on the 2.4 band you will most likely be on G and have a speed of 54.On the 5 gig side you should see speeds up to 300

Actually Linksys is one of the better manufactors in regards for manuals. Any way you need to access the router. Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser address bar. It should bring up the log in box if you have not changed the default password then leave the user blank and the password is admin.

Click on the wireless tab to setup the wireless settings.

Do you use the same SSID name for both networks on your router?

No for the 5 gig side I use DavidsN and on the 2.4 side i use Davids. That way i can tell which side i am on by the connection listed on the task bar icon.  Since i have a mix of N and G equipment I use WPA but the key is the same on Both SSIDS. If I only had N equpment  i would use WPA2 but my printer will only work up to WPA and since it is wireless it would not connect if security was set to WPA2.
