lt win modem freeze

Question

My Inspiron 5000 lt win modem works fine on a bad line, where it connects at about 28,800.  However, on a clear line, it 'locks up' at least once a day and I either have to disconnect and redial or, sometimes reboot.  By 'locking up', I mean it is connected but does not send or receive.  The puzzling thing is that the clearer and better the line is, the more frequently the lock up.  I have tried to reduce the connection speed through the control panel, but it does not help.

Just out of curiosity, do you have call waiting or voice mail?  Or are these computer-only lines?  (When I was in the states)  I used to be able to tell when I would have a message on my voicemail (through phone company) cuz that would kick me off the internet all-together whereas a non-message leaving call would just leave me lag for a couple minutes...

No, I do not have 'extras' on my phone line.  The phone line is a dedicated line and I use it only for dial up.

I tried to install the driver, but my computer installs it to com 2. The correct port is com3 and it won't let me change it. I reinstalled the old driver, and it installed to com 3.

How can I change the port where the modem is installed? I looked at device manager, but there did not seem to be an option there. On the control panel, I can highlight the port, but not change it.

The modem is a softmodem and so the port is virtual, with no Windows setting.  Having it install on COM2 is of no consequence.  Just make sure the old driver is deleted first.
