We're losing the connection at least 2-3 times a day.
Both systems are running XP SP2 and AOL 9 SE and I'm convinced the combination has discombobulated something in the systems. I've been through all the regular stuff, the AOL resets etc etc changes the time-outs in the power systems so that the hard drive doesn't turn off (grasping at straws admittedly). I suppose I'll have to use their live help which I'm loath to do since I've found they know less than I do.
I even searched the web for the error number that pops up and found that someone on a French language bulletin board was having similar problems but since my French is extremely rudimentary I'm not going to join that board and have a discussion. Anyway, no-one answered him.
The error number that is displayed is 24-02-08-041.
Thank you for the MS reference. It took me a while to get through to them and I had to hassle with the first level help desk before they would pass me on to the people controlling that hotfix. VERY frustrating when the person on the other end says they can give you the fix but won't!

tulrose,
You can get the correct modem driver for your Lucent Winmodem from this link:
http://www.agere.com/entnet/modem_drivers.html
If you want the Dell flavor of this driver for Windows 98, you can get it from this link:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=r23913&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19
If you are using Windows ME, and you want the Dell flavor of this driver, then you can find it at this link:
http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?cat=sup&subcat=dyd&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&k=9C904me.EXE
If you are using Windows XP, the driver is native to XP.

It's frustrating to say the least.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

No, no discernable pattern. My husband and I have completely different modes of working and I haven't been able to duplicate the drop-off.
He's on the 4100 but I'm using an I-8000 laptop.
Thanks anyway,
Rosemary

Anyway, it seems to have fixed my problems.
Thanks again,
