M3800 No LAN Adapter Windows 10

Hi,

Not sure if this will help, and the link is for wireless networks but substitute clicking on "wifi" for clicking on "ethernet" and see if removing all network profiles may help.

Does the system recognize other USB devices when you plug them in or does this seem to be limited to the system not recognizing that specific ethernet adapter?  

Please let me know if it's an issue with all USB devices, that specific adapter, or if a different adapter may work with Win10.

Thanks for the response. All USB devices are being recognized; actually, this one is too, as it does make a noise when I plug it in. The issue is that there is NO ethernet or LAN option that seems to be in stalled on the computer anymore. If I go to "Device Manager," the only adapter installed is Wifi. I basically am trying to figure out how I can install a wired adapter (Realtek? Intel?) in order to get the USB to ethernet connector to work.

Sorry, shouldn't have said recognized USB devices but rather did they operate correctly once they are attached?  I'm trying to determine whether this is an issue with that one specific USB device or whether it's across all USB devices.  I wanted to explain my question a bit further.  Can you confirm that a USB device, such as a flash drive, works normally?

If it were working normally the USB device (or your system rather) would be installing a driver so that USB to ethernet connector would work.  

Check out this article regarding "No Networking Hardware Available after Windows 10 Upgrade".   It normally relates to integrated NICs but maybe this is the same issue.  Hopefully following it's instructions will lead to your ethernet options returning.

Other USB devices work just fine (flash drives, external HD). This device (which came with my Dell originally--on Windows 8.1, and worked just great) works just fine on other computers. There just isn't an ethernet option installed on this laptop anymore. When I plug in the USB-Ethernet adapter and have the Network Connections window open, I occasionally see "Ethernet 2" quickly appear and instantly disappear. 

The link provided is regarding having a VPN installed, which I do not. I followed the instructions, but it just said "dni_dne is not installed."

When I go to my adapters on my desktop computer (also Windows 10), I see Bluetooth, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. On the Dell laptop, I only see Wi-Fi. I need to find a way of installing ethernet.

Since the M3800 is such a slim, low profile, system it doesn't have an integrated ethernet card (NIC).   As such Windows won't, to the best of my understanding, list an ethernet listing similar to what you see in your desktop if the system isn't installing / recognizing the USB adapter.  

When you go into Device Manager, under the "universal serial bus controller" category, do you see a listing for the USB-ethernet adapter when it's plugged in?  Or even under the "Network Adapters" category?   Check to make sure, if you see a listing, it's Enabled.  

It may simply come down to this ethernet adapter isn't compatible with Windows 10.  I can't find any specifics on the OS it's designed to work with.    If it worked with your system using Win8.1 but isn't working in Win10, but other USB devices (and your USB system) work correctly that leads toward my thinking it isn't compatible.   It's a USB device, it's generally "plug & play" with drivers.

Do you have another ethernet adapter that you can test?

I tried plugging the adapter into a laptop running Win7, and it tried to install LAN7500. So, I searched for this and found http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=D6FX1

However, when trying to install this, it fails, perhaps because it is only designed for Win7 and Win8? I searched online for an adapter for it for Win10, but the ones I found want you to install some device installer, which I really don't want to try.

I do not see anything related to the device under USB or Network Adapters when the USB-ethernet adapter is plugged in. I do not have another USB-ethernet adapter to try, as this is the one I received from Dell when my I received my computer (it was a seed machine).

If it was a seed machine can you contact whomever your rep is to see if they can help you?   If they're providing the USB adapter with the systems they may have already experienced (or had a customer who experienced) this problem. 

The last thing I can think of is that Windows 10 *should* have an innate driver that will run that USB device if it's compatible with the OS.  But since you're hearing the "ding" but nothing is installing, and the device isn't listed in device manager, that it doesn't work in your setup.  Unfortunately, if the USB adapter isn't compatible there isn't anything I can do to help you.
