mini pci wireless
Dear wireless fans,
I've been searching the network section for a while looking for information, and I'm overloaded....so I'll just ask.
I would like to buy a wireless PCI card and remove its mini pci card so that I can install it in to an 8200.
I can not do any soldering....none.
Is there an item I could buy that I could extract without soldering AND connect to the 8200's internal antenna WITHOUT soldering.
I've seen instructions for doing this with the Linksys wireless G router
at http://www.geocities.com/flipsoft/linksys.html
but the router is $115. Perhaps this could be accomplished with a similar, less expensive item? What do you recommend.?

I just got the DWL-520+ and the antenna connector is soldered :-/
Am I SOL here? I waited over a month for the card since it was backordered and got the screws off and bang soldered. Any thoughts? Did they switch things up on us?

QED. Quite Easily Done
Purchased dlink 520+ at best buy for 43 dollars open box special. It tool 5 minutes to install on my 8200. Everything is great and it was so cheap. Reception is better than my 650+ external card. Seems like the dlink 520+ drivers are the same as the dlink 650+ drivers.

I did have to score the 16 pin on the card to enable standbye on my xp 8200. see.... http://tech-science.com/shared/dwl520minipci/howto.htm

Ok, this has been getting more and more confusing.
I have a 8200: currently using Orinoco Gold PC CARD, Linksys Wireless Router 802.11(b)(bfs4) and need a little more distance and signal strength after rearranging office/bedroom.
Should I just order the MINI PCI Dell True Mobil 1400 Part # 3X548, Linksys Signal Booster or the Dlink 520+ and modify the PCI for the Mini.
I currently get a Low signal in the exteme location room dropping to 2mps at times.
Any advice??????????????????

What mini-PCI cards are you guys using. I'm trying to decide between getting one from either the linksys WMP55AG or the D-Link DWLAG520. The card is going in an Inspiron 8200.
Has anyone used either of these?

has anyone had any experience with the tri-mode cards? I was thinking of getting the d-link DWL-AG520 (if i can find one is stock) but from the picture i can't see anywhere where a mini-pci card might go.

i'm using a mini-pci card that i ripped out of my 520+ in my 5100 inspiron now. the mini card only has one antenna connector soldered, so i can only connect one antennae to it (i connected the black wire, not sure if it makes a difference) I'm wondering which of the pci wireless cards out there in the market has 2 antennae. Anyone has any ideas?
Right now i am using this mini card instead of the pcmcia 650+ card. So far, i am getting a slightly better ( 70~71% versus 67%) signal strength from it.
Just wondering why the mods locked the other thread. Do you think maybe dell doesn't like us discussing ways of DIY wireless installs?
Also, do you guys think we can just solder an antenna connector onto the unused contact plate on the mini card, and proceed to connect the second antenna cable from the notebook into the mini pci card?

I just received a d-link dwl-g520. I took the cover off and there was a mini-pci card inside, but unfortunetly there was no connector. The wire leading to the pci card was soldered to the mini-pci card.
Does anyone know how i can make this work?

Looks like you're in need of some fine soldering work. Just unsolder the antenna cable connection on the mini card and resolder the antenna cable from your notebook to that same contact point. Someone else on the forum has mentioned the use of solder pen and heating the contact at no more than 5 seconds.
GL! (sure glad i didn' t use a G520. :P )
There's a better alternative: return that G520 and get a 520+ from your local stores instead. This card had one good antenna connector on the mini card that you can use on your laptop.
