Misleading error messages on dial-up

I am using a Dell Dimension 2400 with dial-up to a local ISP. Very rarely I am able to connect to my ISP with one click. Usually I get messages "The phone line is in use",followed by "There was no dialtone." I make certain that there is a dialtone. Usually I have to redial repeatedly, sometimes many redials, before I get finally get connected. Sometimes, after all this redialling, I get a message:"The remote computer is not responding" or "A device is not functioning properly." What could that device be besides the modem?

If this is a new system, open the case and reseat the modem board in the slot. Always possible you just have a poor phone line, or live in old bldg with bad wiring. Ask your local phone company to test the line. Remove and then make sure the phone cord is connected snuggly to both the modem and the wall jacks. You might want to try a different and shorter phone cord too. Possible the modem is bad. Look on the Dell downloads for a Modem Helper for the modem in your system and run the tests.
