modem is not detecting dialtone and causing phone not to work.

I have a dimesion 4400 a few years old with a  Conexant FSF v92 56k data fax PCI modem. I use dialup for netzero and also a citrix connection. Neither work now and I get a message that it is not getting a dialtone. I tried a regular phone on that jack and wire and also uninstalled and installed the driver. Last night after some testing I noticed my phones were not working and it sounded as if I picked up a phone after someone else had already dialed on another phone on the same line. When I disconected the PC line from the phone jack my phones worked. What is really strange is that the PC was turned off when I had the phone problems. So what does this tell me?

I have a Dimension 4400, purchased in 2002. I had very similar problems. I replaced the modem and it eliminated the trouble entirely.

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, did you get the replacement through dell or did you just get a similar one from a computer store.

My 4400 was out of warranty so I just went to the store and purchased one. I got a USR external USB modem, and it works great.

Thanks,

In this case the previous response was correct. I did change my modem and now it works. The only time I would suspect the telephone service is when it never worked before with that service. In my case I have been using it for a couple years.
