Modem on hold. Can't always connect. Why?

Can someone please help me.  I have Dell Dimmension 4550, little over a year old.  The modem on hold is installed and I have been using it for about a year.  Now all of a sudden it doesn't always come on.Sometimes if I shut down completely it might start when I start the computer back up.  I've found that by restoring at a certain date, it will connect.  But the last few days nothing will get it connected.  I have BCM  V.92  56K 128MB.  I checked my access phone numbers and I can't see where it tells whether it's .V.90 or 92.  Can someone please help me?

The BCM Modem drivers are in Microsoft's Windows Update Critical Update section. If you do the Microsoft Update (or did it without noticing), that updates the BCM's drivers to 3.5.25. I suspect that where the problem is arising from, especially if you restore back to a time before your most recent Windows Update.

The BCM drivers 3.5.24 and 3.5.25 have built in Modemon Hold features. Check your driver version (go to Control Panel >> Phone and Modem Options >> Modem >> Properties >> Drivers). If your driver is 3.5.25,as I suspect, it was updated through Windows Update. If that is the case, to resolve your issues, enable Modem on Hold in the drivers (go to Control Panel >> Phone and Modem Options >> Modem >> Properties >> Modem on HOld, then check the box to enable it).  Also, you will need to disable the Dell Modem on Hold (BVRP Modem on Hold), as that process is done through your new driver.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the information, hrova.  I went to the driver as you said and it was 3.5.25, so I went to the drivers and checked that box to enable it.  Then you said to disable the Dell Modem on Hold (BVRP Modem on Hold), as that process is done through the new driver.  How and where do I disable the dell modem on hold?  It's still saying not connected.  Do I uninstall that program and how will know if my phone will ring while on line?  Sorry to sound so stupid.  Thanks again.

You *should* get to talk the same amount of time. When I use it, my ISP gives me 4 minutes.

Being knocked off immediately happens when I am connected at V90, not V92. Double check your ISP numbers to see if they changed some, or if they added numbers to your dial up process that are not V92. I have NetZero, and have selected only the V.92 numbers for dial up, but frequently get messages  asking me if I want to add more dial up numbers which are available. I have to say no, because those are the non v.92 numbers which I intentionally avoided....

What says it is not connected? Is that the Modem on Hold Program? The Modem on Hold program does not work with the updated driver, so if the MOH program says it is not connected, you may very well have MOH working fine with what you have done.

If I am correct, the Dell Modem on Hold has a little icon in the taskbar and that is how you know it is running. The MOH built into the driver does not give any icon, so it is kind of working on faith. Go online and have someone call you. You should get a pop up box informing you of the call, even though it looks like no MOH software is running.

If it is not working, look somewhere in the Modem on Hold Program, look for a way to stop it form automatically starting when you start up your computer. Sorry,  I can't be more specific as I never used that particular program.

You could also uninstall it from the Control Panel Add / Remove Programs option.

Let me know if this works....

Thanks again for your help.  Yes it does work.  I guess like you said, just have faith that it is always working.  The Dell modem on hold was nice as you could talk on the phone when it rang for 4 or 5 minutes before it knocked you off line.  With this way, it seems to knock you off right now.  But that's okay as I can tell when someone calls and hopefully won't miss calls now.  Thanks again.

I'm on Juno which I think may be connected to net zero.  There are four phone numbers for my area.  How can I tell if they're V.92 or .90?

Here is a link to a Juno phone list page.

http://my.juno.com/s/numbers

Go there, put in the area code and first three of your phone number, and it will open a page with the numbers in your area. It will also say whether each number is V.90 or V.92.

There is probably some way in Juno to choose which numbers it dials. If it's imprtant to you, choose only the V.92 numbers to get the talk time.

(and yes, Juno and NetZero are both owned by United Online, and they both offer four minutes of talk time with Modem on Hold)

I did what you said, I got the numbers that were V.92 entered into my list.  I don't know who you are, but I certainly thank you for all of your help.  I would have gone crazy trying to figure out what was wrong.  I think this forum is great.  I will be on vacation for about 10 days.   Thank you again so much.

Don't know where my message went, but I guess I'll try again.  My Modem-on-Hold won't work anymore either.  It was fine for about six months, and made life a lot easier.  Then all kinds of funny things started to happen, culminating in the installation by Dell of a new modem, which made everything else work fine.  I thought that would fix Modem-on-Hold, too, but no.  According to Phone and Modem Options,  my modem is PCTEL 2304WT V.9x MDC, driver version 2.50.52.0.  I clucked I mean clicked on Update Driver and something happened, but I notice that it is still dated 6/13/2003.  I am working on a Dell Inspiron 8500, XP Pro.  Please help!

Thanks,

Dorothy

I know what you mean -  love Modem on Hold.

What was your previous modem? And what software did you use for Modem on Hold to work? Have you made sure the software is on? And what does it say when it does not work? Do you get any messages, or does it just do nothing about incoming calls?

I am not  familiar with laptop modem issues, and since this is an old thread, you may want to start a new on - might get more responses....

Thanks for answering - it's really good to get a response at least.  The modem that came in the laptop is only listed as "1 430-0493 INTEGRATED NIC AND MODEM" in the purchase order; I'll have to get some of the other documentation if that matters.  I was using the same software - Windows XP Pro, which came preinstalled, and the Dell Modem-on-Hold was already set up.  It is definitely turned on and set to let me know about all calls, and I even set it so a splash screen shows on starting the computer, just to be sure it's on each time.  It doesn't say anything when it doesn't work, it just doesn't DO anything when someone calls! I did start a new thread in the Dell Inspiron Modem forum, realizing that this might not be very visible, but so far no response at all from anyone there.  I have checked with my ISP, who says the line I'm using is v92 enabled, and when we went over the modem settings he said everything seems to be in order from that point of view.  Any other ideas?  It was so nice to know I wasn't hogging the line! Thanks again - Dorothy

Have you asked Dell for suggestions?

I have no ideas here... Good luck...

Have I!  I've spent hours on various types of hold.  I'm still on warranty, but (I won't detail the number of steps and retries) Tech Support sent me to Software Support, which says that "for some reason" Dell does not support Dell Modem on Hold, and gave me several other fee-based numbers I might try.  I couldn't even get through to them, and their website was of no use, did not even seem to relate to my Dell software although at that point I may not have been seeing very clearly!  Thanks for the luck, and for letting me sound off.
