Modem on hold. Can't always connect. Why?
Can someone please help me. I have Dell Dimmension 4550, little over a year old. The modem on hold is installed and I have been using it for about a year. Now all of a sudden it doesn't always come on.Sometimes if I shut down completely it might start when I start the computer back up. I've found that by restoring at a certain date, it will connect. But the last few days nothing will get it connected. I have BCM V.92 56K 128MB. I checked my access phone numbers and I can't see where it tells whether it's .V.90 or 92. Can someone please help me?

The BCM Modem drivers are in Microsoft's Windows Update Critical Update section. If you do the Microsoft Update (or did it without noticing), that updates the BCM's drivers to 3.5.25. I suspect that where the problem is arising from, especially if you restore back to a time before your most recent Windows Update.
The BCM drivers 3.5.24 and 3.5.25 have built in Modemon Hold features. Check your driver version (go to Control Panel >> Phone and Modem Options >> Modem >> Properties >> Drivers). If your driver is 3.5.25,as I suspect, it was updated through Windows Update. If that is the case, to resolve your issues, enable Modem on Hold in the drivers (go to Control Panel >> Phone and Modem Options >> Modem >> Properties >> Modem on HOld, then check the box to enable it). Also, you will need to disable the Dell Modem on Hold (BVRP Modem on Hold), as that process is done through your new driver.
Hope this helps you.

You *should* get to talk the same amount of time. When I use it, my ISP gives me 4 minutes.
Being knocked off immediately happens when I am connected at V90, not V92. Double check your ISP numbers to see if they changed some, or if they added numbers to your dial up process that are not V92. I have NetZero, and have selected only the V.92 numbers for dial up, but frequently get messages asking me if I want to add more dial up numbers which are available. I have to say no, because those are the non v.92 numbers which I intentionally avoided....

What says it is not connected? Is that the Modem on Hold Program? The Modem on Hold program does not work with the updated driver, so if the MOH program says it is not connected, you may very well have MOH working fine with what you have done.
If I am correct, the Dell Modem on Hold has a little icon in the taskbar and that is how you know it is running. The MOH built into the driver does not give any icon, so it is kind of working on faith. Go online and have someone call you. You should get a pop up box informing you of the call, even though it looks like no MOH software is running.
If it is not working, look somewhere in the Modem on Hold Program, look for a way to stop it form automatically starting when you start up your computer. Sorry, I can't be more specific as I never used that particular program.
You could also uninstall it from the Control Panel Add / Remove Programs option.
Let me know if this works....

Here is a link to a Juno phone list page.
http://my.juno.com/s/numbers
Go there, put in the area code and first three of your phone number, and it will open a page with the numbers in your area. It will also say whether each number is V.90 or V.92.
There is probably some way in Juno to choose which numbers it dials. If it's imprtant to you, choose only the V.92 numbers to get the talk time.
(and yes, Juno and NetZero are both owned by United Online, and they both offer four minutes of talk time with Modem on Hold)

I know what you mean - love Modem on Hold.
What was your previous modem? And what software did you use for Modem on Hold to work? Have you made sure the software is on? And what does it say when it does not work? Do you get any messages, or does it just do nothing about incoming calls?
I am not familiar with laptop modem issues, and since this is an old thread, you may want to start a new on - might get more responses....

Have you asked Dell for suggestions?
I have no ideas here... Good luck...
