The response is mostly correct in that where you will see the big drop in speed is from the desktop to the laptop, almost a 90% drop in speed could be possible.
why go wireless with a destop?

probably can't justify it.
1) suspect I may have a bad cable - many times a day I get "network is now disconnected" followed by "network is now connected."
2) part of a bigger desire to remove some cables from floor around my desk.
