msn connection problem on trumobile 2300

connected all cables as directed, surf the internet with ease, however, msn messenger will not connect. can unhook router and go direct from modem to pc and bingo works!  all this is done thru hard wired into router without trying the wireless route

The most straightforward way to get msn working within a network that's protected from the Internet by a router that supports NAT (Network Address Translation - see explanation here) is to obtain a router that supports "Universal Plug and Play" (see list here). Unfortuntately the TM 2300 doesn't support UPnP.

(edit) I noticed that the list of routers supporting UPnP posted at DSL Reports isn't very up to date, and doesn't include any wireless routers. I think you'll find that many recent routers from Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear support UPnP.

Make sure you have the latest version of MSN Messener that was made available this month. It supposedly supports non UPnP. It's version 6.2. (6.2.0137)

sounds promising folks! however, i unistalled messenger and reinstalled the newest version to no avail. bummer. also in the 2300 admin settings it a has feature to check for pnp, tried that also. the rep at dell advised i needed to add ports but couldn't or shall i say wouldnt advise on how to do so. thanks anyhow to all of you for the continued support. dell obviously doesnt care

Mary G, thanks! I hope you're right. There are now two people I'm aware of who haven't been able to get MSN Messenger to work since they installed a TM 2300.

That's a much less expensive fix than replacing the router! tsmall99, if you try downloading the latest version of MSN Messenger, let us know whether the problem is resolved!

This is the strangest problem! I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out. The replies I've seen to questions about MSN NAT problems range from "Basic functionality (chat) works with no changes to NAT" to "I can't get this to work at all!".

One common port that gets mentioned is TCP and UDP 1863. Try forwarding those two (both TCP and UDP) to the machine you're running MSN on, and see what happens.

(edit) Another oft-mentioned fix is to turn off the "QoS Packet Scheduler" for the XP network connection. That's found under Properties/Networking for the connection.
