My Desktop Keeps Losing My Internet Connection
Hi.
I've got a Dimension 4600. If I leave the computer unintended, say for an hour or more, the PC loses the Internet connection. I have to shut down and restart to regain my Internet connection.
Before recently switching to SBC/Yahoo DSL, I had Qwest/MSN DSL. Under Qwest, the internet connection would simply freeze at various times and then come back mysteriously, sometimes without rebooting. With SBC, if I'm using the PC, the connection stays on. I only lose the connection when I leave the PC alone. It seems to me that these problems started happening after I upgraded to SP2 last year.
Here are some details, which may or may not be relevant:
Windows XP Pro, SP2
2Wire Modem
Original Intel Ethernet Card
ZoneAlarm Firewall
Ethernet Cable connection (not wireless)
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Open Device Manger, click on the + sign to expand the listing for network adapters, right click your network adapter and select properties from the drop down menu. On the Power Management tab, uncheck the box in front of "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". See if that fixes the problem.

I had no idea that Windows even had that setting. It was certainly burried and took some effort to find even after I opened the properties for the device. I wouldn't be surprised if this fixes the problem.
