my notebook is running really slow

I have Dell Latitude D610 with Windows XP.  All of a sudden my computer freezes or hangs while I am trying to do anything either connected to the internet or the just working on my computer in general.  I have cleaned up my temporary files but that didn't seem to work.  It is really frustrating.  Any info would help.

Have you cleaned your computer of viruses?  Have you run more than one anitspyware program to get rid of any garbage your have intentionally or unintentionally downloaded from the internet?

Thanks for replying.  I have scanned my computer for spyware and viruses and it is clean.  I have also performed disk checks on both drives and have also changed my paging file.  I can't think of anything else I can do.

Just to make sure you are free of spyware and malware, go to the HijackThis forum - http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack - read the message in red at the top of that forum, then follow directions to post a HijackThis log in that forum.  Slow downs and freeze-ups are very commonly caused by these nasties that get onto computers over the internet.
