Need a 1450 driver that will support WPA
Good morning,
I have an Inspiron laptop and a Dimension desktop, both running XP SP3. they bth connect to a BT Home Hub 3, but whilst the wireless connection on the laptop allows me to use WPA authentication, the connection on the desktop will only allow WEP. I believe that someone is hacking into my router (borne out by some discussion on the Bt forum), so I need to update the driver for the 1450 USB wireless adapter so I can set up WPA encryption - if I set my hub to WPA, the laptop will work with it but the desktop won't - good for my wife but not so good for me!
The only deiver I can find on the Dell site is:

which i already have installed, but would appear to be a little out of date.
Does anyone know of a newer version that i can download to allow me to set up a WPA connection via my 1450?

Amazon also has similar adapters. You can pay a lot more for these wireless usb adapters but it's not necessary.

You need to upgrade to a new adapter. The 1450 is WEP capable, not WPA. Think about buying an inexpensive N wireless adapter and you will be ready when you upgrade your router. I bought an Airlink usb N wireless at Meritline for $12.99 that works fine. N is backwards compatible with your a-G router.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm a little puzzled - another forum suggests that what I need to do is apply a Windows XP patch which will allow me to create my wireless connection using WPA2. Do I need to buy a new wireless adapter, or will this patch do the trick?

If anyone's interested, the patch is described thus on the Microsoft site:
"This update to Windows XP provides support for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), which is the latest standards-based wireless security solution derived from the IEEE 802.11i standard."

If memory serves me correctly, WPA support for XP systems started with SP2 and SP3. There was a download for SP1 systems.
Like Mary stated, the wireless adapter does not support WPA Security, so it will need replaced.
