Need help updating drivers for internet

I just received this dimension 8100 from a friend and I am trying to make it work with my unbelievable slow dial-up internet.  When I called the internet company they had me look at the drivers and they were from the mid 90's.  How do I update these?  The modem says it's HCF 56K PCI COM 3.  I would really appreciate any help.  I have NO idea what I am doing!!  Thanks.

First off, I would suggest getting a friend to help you out with getting updated drivers, especially if they have broadband (DHL, Cable) go to them and go to the webpage

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8100&os=WW1&osl=EN

This will be the list of drivers, for your computer, what you would want to do is go through this and download your drivers.

I would suggest getting and installing the drivers in this order

Chipset

Video

Audio

Networks (including Modem)

Also if you have a friend that understands this more then you do, then I would suggest requesting their help with this as well

Updateing software is easy, but if done incorrectly, it can screw up your computer.

Thanks

Dear active1
Good advice from Ryan. You could also browse to 'Optimize XP'[note the zed] (mywebpages.comcast.net), a great, efficient site for optimising and security tips:

Scroll to Step 4 'Driver XP' and click Home Page;

'Driver Updates' offers free scan and identifies all needed updates;

Step 3 on same page is: 'Identify' and 'PC Wizard'. Download this wizard to get exact names of the drivers you want to replace;

Step 4 is a good list of all the current drivers you might need, and the order of installation.

Highly recommend doing this with someone who knows more than you. I've followed all the steps on the site and my 9300 is running great - and I have no vested interest in plugging this site - honest!

Good luck,

Rik
