Her modem is apparently bad because of the lightning hit. However, it could have also damaged other internal components and just replacing the modem may not work. The cable that connects the modem to the telco wall jack is probably bad too.
However, whatever modem you install must have a driver for that specific modem. A driver for a different modem won't work.
Thanks so much for the info..I replaced the phone line from the computer to the wall and then brought it home and tried it on mine..It caused my telephone to have the same static sound over my phone until I unpluged the phone wire from the computer to the phone line.. I may just buy a new modem and give it a try and pray that it's not the motherboard. The computer is just about 1 1/2 yr old if that old..She is 70 years old, knows nothing about a computer, she only knows how to emails her friends. It gives her enjoyment... Thanks so much for your help..
