Netgear connection

Question

I have a Netgear WNR834b router that works fine with my new Dell inspiron E1505.....My daughter has an older Dell Latitude 600C with an external wireless card - 802.11b.  I can not seem to get her wireless connection to work with my router.  I know my router works since my computer if fine.  Some one said it may be the older computer needs a download to recognize the newer router ( WPA-SK ) encryption.   Help!!!

Generally, 802.11b wireless cards are not WPA-PSK compliant...unless there is an update available to the software. Unfortunately, along about the time WPA-PSK became available, Wireless G technology arrived and manufacturers felt it unnecessary to upgrade the wireless b software. Turn off your WPA security, or switch to WEP and see if you can get the wireless b card to connect to the network?

Is this something I do on my daughter's laptop....or is a something I change on the router?( router software loaded is on my desktop......I'm not sure I want to change the security features on the router because I use my new laptop ( inspiron 1505) and everything works fine.....the trouble I'm having is connecting with my daugthers laptop ( Latitude 600c)

Does your daughter's Latitude have the capability to configure the wireless card for WPA- PSK encryption? If not, you'll need to temporarily configure the router and all other network computers for WEP encryption to see if your daughter's laptop can connect to the network/internet? If you can connect it using the WEP encryption, then the fact that your daughter's laptop can't connect using the WPA-PSK is because it doesn't support WPA-PSK.
