Have you tried a different USB port on the system? Since it works on another computer it might be a problem with the USB port you are (currently) using.
yes, we have tried different usb ports, last time it actually worked; just beofre we powered down the computer we were prompted to power off the device, never recognized again
Have you tried booting to Safe Mode and checking Device Manager (with the adapter connected)? I've seen in the past where things show up in Safe Mode that don't normally show up ...

Is it a USB wireless adapter or a PCI wireless adapter. Does it show up in Device Manager when you expand the listing for Network Adapters?
