Network locks up computer, any help would be appreciated

Hi and thanks in advance for any help you might have for me, I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 with a Dell Wireless adapter 1350. I have a cable modem with a Linksys Wireless G router, (wrt54g). My computer is running Windows XP professional with the latest network drivers installed. The issue I'm having is that whenever I connect my laptop to the network, either by a direct connection with an Ethernet cable, or via the wireless adapter, my laptop locks up. The mouse doesn't move and nothing changes on screen. The only thing i can do restart the machine. I have tried letting it sit to see if it works the issue out and comes back, but after an hour I decided that was enough time to determine if it was coming back. Thanks again.

This issue has been occurring since i got the machine. It is a laptop my office has given me to use when I'm not at work. I've been working with the IT people at my work to determine if it is a result of any settings or software they have put on it, but we cannot find an issue. They have taken it home and tested it with their own systems and it worked perfectly with out crashing once. Only when I connect it to my home network do i get issues.

I was wondering if there is some incompatibility with the Linksys modems, or perhaps some network setting i might be able to check that might lead to this problem.

Thanks,

Greg

Have you tried using System Restore to return your computer to a state it was in prior to the development of the problem?

Try booting to Safe Mode with Network Support and see if the problem still occurs.  If it does, then that will eliminate the possibility of background programs that run from normal startup are the problem.  We can then procede from there.

Logging in with safe-mode works just fine. I can connect to my router and cruise the web. So your saying that since this works, it most likely is the result of some program loading at startup causing the issue?

Perhaps going to msconfig and disabling the startup programs would be the next step?

" Perhaps going to msconfig and disabling the startup programs would be the next step?"   Yes, that would be the logical next step.  Try removing startup items one at a time, rebooting each time to narrow down the culprit.

I went through taking one off the startup list at a time. until every item under startup was unchecked. and the system still locked up. Should i proceed to the other tabs, services, boot.ini, win.ini, system.ini?

Check the Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and the Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

There are other places in the Windows Registry that can run startup programs, particualry ones put there by malware or viruses, but it gets complicated to find them.  Try the above first.

Hi, I went in and checked, nothing in my startup folders.

Also I have 2 anti-spyware programs and an up to date virus software running, I'm confident that I do not have any maleware running on this machine. Where i work is very secure. But if you do have places for me to check, I will certainly investigate.

I'll get back to you about what happens when i make the change in the services tab under msconfig
