Adam,

If you reinstalled XP, and didn't reinstall the chipset drivers for the Inspiron 500m, that fact would explain the symptom. Does the Ethernet adapter appear in the Device Manager? Are there are any problems listed for it?

The Inspiron/Network board is better place for troubleshooting Inspiron networking problems. If you need more help, you might want to post there.

Are you networking one PC to another PC? Or are you networking a PC through a hub? If you are trying to network 2 PCs without a hub, you need a special network cable called a crossover cable.

If you are networking through a hub, what operating system are you using? You need to make sure TCP/IP is installed.
