Networking Problems with CPxJ Lattitude Laptop

Question

I had to reload the OS (Windows 98SE) onto my CPxJ Laptop and have been unable to access the Internet since.  The laptop does not recognize my modem, and the two PCMCIA adapters both show 'empty', even though I have a credit card modem installed along with the related software.  I have tried a Xircom CM-56 modem as well as an RBEM56G-100 credit card modem.  The RBEM model was working previously with Windows 98 before I uninstalled it and formatted the drive.  What do I need to do to get the adapters to recognize my modem?

Did you install drivers for the modem card(s)?  The cards will not run or be recognized unless the drivers are intalled. Steve

No matter what modem I plug into the adapter, the laptop does not recognize anything.  I purchased a Verizon wireless modem and installed it along with software.  It was not recognized, but worked fin when installed in a new Toshiba laptop which my wife just purchased.  The adapter shows both connections as 'empty' no matter what is plugged into them.

Yes, drivers have been installed, removed and reinstalled; modem deleted and reinstalled.  When I reinstall the modem & software, it is shown as working properly, but when I click on the PCMCIA icon in control panel, both adpters are shown as 'empty', and any modem testing done with the Xircom software shows no adapters installed and cannot find the modem.

I am not all that familiar with the Latitude line of computers, so I don't know when this computer was first sold by Dell.  If it was after the intitial release of Windows XP, then the chipset drivers would not be native to Windows, thus if you have reinstalled Windows and did not install the chipset drivers as the first device drivers loaded after the reintstall, then this could explain your problem, as Windows cannot recoginze or properly install drivers unless the chipset drivers are present.
