New Connection Wizard 2nd Screen, "Connect directly to another computer" is not selectable

Desktop PC: Dimension 8200;   Notebook: Inspiron 6000
                OS(both): WinXP Home, SP2

I am trying to setup a cable direct connect peer-to-peer network between the above noted PCs. Using the "New Connection Wizard" the desktop connection was setup without a hitch. However, when the connection setup was tried for the notebook "Connect directly to another computer" option was "greyed" out and not selectable on the second screen. Can someone please advise me how the "Connect directly..." option can be activated and made as a selectable option in the setup process? During the setup I have the Crossover Patch Cable connected to both computers. Thank you for your assistance.

you need to ensure that you are using a "Crossover" not a "Patch". How you find out is by looking at the bottom of the RJ-45 connection. you will notice that the colors that go form right to left on one end will be backwardson the other end (Left to Right).

The orange and green pairs are switched on a crossover cable.

One end is wired in the EIA/TIA-568-B standard. And the other end is wired in the EIA/TIA-568-A standard.

EIA/TIA-568-B
---------------

1. White/orange

2. Orange

3. White/green

4. Blue

5. White/blue

6. Green

7. White/brown

8. Brown

EIA/TIA-568-A
--------------

Straight through cables are usually wired with EIA/TIA-568-B standard on both ends.
