New to this routing and networking stuff - please help

Hello
I just got new inspiron 6400 laptop with the 10/100 integrated card and modem.  I also have Westell dsl model and an ethernet cable.  I don't know how to use this stuff.  I want to connect the laptop to the dsl, and assume the ethernet cable is what I need - is that right?  It is bellsouth.  do I install the software that came with Westell modem to the laptop first - or do I just plug in the ethernet cable and use this quickset icon?  I'm so lost, and it's probably a simple solution, but I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed...

You don't need to install any software to use an ethernet connection. Just plug the ethernet cable into the Westell and to your computer.

You will need to set up the Westell to connect. It will need the username and password bellsouth assigned you when you signed up for DSL.

I have forgotten where the Westell setup page is located (192.168.0.254 or perhaps 192.168.1.254 ?), but your documentation should have that information.

Thank you!  I got it working.  Guess I can't be on net at same time on both computers though?  or can I?  Is that what a router is for?

Yes. That is what a router is for.

I don't know about your particular modem, some Westell modems also function as a limited router. If yours is functioning as a router, a simple switch would allow multiple connections.

Better solution, however, is a good router with firewall (and optionally wireless). If you add a router, set the Westell to bridged mode and let the router handle the PPPoE connection and DHCP.
