New XP Install on C610 and Network Controller driver

Hello,

I just upgraded to Windows XP.  I have a question mark in Device Manager next to "Network Controller".  How do I know which driver I need?

Thanks

Chucki3,

The network controller is probably the 3C920 integrated LAN device. Installation of the XP driver is described here.<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Note that there may be a more recent version of the driver available through Product Support/Downloads.

Thanks Jim,

I already updated the 3C920 integrated LAN device with the latest R49651.exe but it had no effect.

My machine wasn't supposed to have any other hardware, but apparently it does.

Chucki3,

Usually, incompletely identified integrated devices result from not installing the "chipset drivers" for the machine. But there aren't any XP chipset drivers for the C610, so that's not it. I suspect you've already tried uninstalling the network drivers, rebooting, and letting XP discover them. Another way to get a fresh "discovery" would be to remove the drivers, reboot into the BIOS System Setup, disable the network device there, and boot into XP. Then reverse the process by re-enabling the device in the BIOS, and see if it gets correctly identified by XP after that.

Other than those, I'm unfortunately out of ideas.

(edit) Here's one more idea. Is the BIOS current? The most recent release from Dell is A16, dated 05/28/2003.

Thanks Jim.

No effect with the BIOS upgrade.  I did discover, however, that when I disable the MiniPCI Device in the BIOS, I stop getting the error in Device Manager.  So, does the machine have a MiniPCI Device and the drivers just won't install (have tried manually) or is XP just seeing a ghost?

Chucki3,

Curiouser and curiouser! I've seen no information suggesting that either the analog modem or the Ethernet adapter on the C610 use the mini-PCI slot. That leaves some sort of wireless adapter as the most likely occupant of that slot. This illustration in the C610 Service Manual shows how to access the mini-PCI slot, so you can check to see if there's a card in there.

If the machine was ordered with a wireless adapter, the device should appear in the "as-shipped" list for the machine which can be retrieved through "Product Support/Service & Warranties". Enter the machine's Service Tag, and see if a wireless adapter is listed in the machine's original system configuration.

Judging from the list of XP downloads for the C610, the Truemobile 1150 mini-PCI card is the likely adapter.

Thanks Jim, for helping me follow through on this.

I opened the back panel.  Turns out I have a Broadcom BCM94301MP mini PCI card.

I've looked for the driver everywhere.  It isn't at dell.com or broadcom.com.  Does anyone know where I can get it?

Thanks.

Chucki3,

A Google search for BCM94301MP dell led to the discovery of this page.

It sounds like you have a Truemobile 1180! Here are the links I found to the most recent driver.

Jim, you're impeccable!

I had no idea that it would be going under a different name.  That this name is not listed as an optional network device for a C610 is even more surprising.

Thanks a million!

Chucki3,

You're welcome! Google is your friend when trying to find things like that!

I wonder how it got there? Did you try looking up the "as-shipped" configuration at Dell Support?

Jim,

I did look it up.  There are a few differences.  There's no mention of a mini-PCI card.  I'm not sure I want to know how it got this way!
