No Internet with Router-Hub Combo

I recently purchased a Inspiron 1525 laptop with Windows Vista. I am trying to connect to the internet with a Speedstream 5660 DSL modem/router and share that connection with a 3Com OfficeConnect Ethernet Hub (4 port). This setup works on the 2 other XP Pro desktops without setting up anything at all. When I plug laptop into hub it gives me local access only, no internet. I CAN access internet by directly connecting to router, if I manually enter IP and DNS. Is this an issue with Vista or settings? Please help.

Reset the network adapter to obtain an IP address automatically so we don't get confused.  Then open a command prompt window and run the ipconfig /all command and post the results for both when you are connected to the hub and when you are connected to the router.  From there we may be able to see what is wrong.

Okay, here are 3 different scenarios in this order. (#1) Connected to router with manually configured IP, up and internet ready. (#2) Connected to router with network adapter set to obtain IP automatically, no internet. (#3) Connected to hub with network adapter set to obtain IP automatically, no internet.

The wireless card is working but does not see the router, hence the 169.254.x.x address.  What does the device manager says about the state of the device?

I tried it but it failed. Maybe its because I'm running Vista.

Try this:


TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.


For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.


Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults:

 

netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults.

 

netsh int ip reset reset.log


Reboot the machine.
