Old Win98 PC not able to connect to internet

Please help me.  I have an old pc still running Windows 98.  I have a cable modem for internet access.  This all started when I installed a nic card to this PC.  The cable modem was connected via  USB to the pc, but I wanted to hookup a wireless router so I needed to install a nic card.  At first, I tried installing a linksys nic, downloaded the driver from the linksys website, but i used the wrong driver during the installation and ever since then the internet hasn't been working.  i have installed a dlink nic with the correct software and still not working.  The dlink nic is working fine, i'm able to obtain an IP address from the router and release and renew again.
 
The problem is when i'm trying to connect to the internet.  i get all sorts of illegal operation errors.  My ip settings are to obtain from a dhcp server, and i have dns disabled.  My laptop works fine on the internet through the router and I'm able to ping the ip of the Win98 PC.  So I'm thinking that there is a software problem.  Can anyone think of anything to help me out?  Thank you in advance.

Have you tried doing a "Remove" of any mention of this network adapter, shutting down the Win 98 computer, removing power and taking the new device completely out of it, re-booting and after that starting all over with this system?

I tried removing all instances of any network adapters in the device manager.  I rebooted then tried to install the new nic with no luck.  Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Dell troubleshooting step number 1 is to remove (literally). For me that is important because even though I believe the PCI card has snapped properly into place, that is not always the case. I would physically remove it, run the computer again without it in there at all. Just to be extra superstitious, after shutting the PC down again, I would even put the PCI card into a totally different PCI slot. It is surprising what kinds of magical movements sometimes work, regardless of how silly the steps seem.
