other networked computers cannot access new one

Question

All my computers are Dells. I have 2 networks, in 2 different homes. All computers used to be able to file share until the the last 2 new ones. The new ones can access the internet and can read and send files to and from the older ones (2 to 5 years old). But the older ones cannot read from or send to the new ones; the older ones still do work amongst theirselves. They all have Windows XP and are updated when Microsoft sends updates. There are mixed versions, XP home, multimedia and pro but that has never been a problem before adding the newer 2 computers.   I have disabled the firewall and use zonealarm. I've turned off zonealarm to experiment and it doesn't make a difference. The new ones can still share with the old ones but not vice versa.   On one network, the old ones do not even see the names of the new one. On the other, it sees the name but cannot gain access with an error similar to the one (is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer (is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer  ) someone had posted a couple of years ago but had no answers.   Any suggestions that I can try?   Thanks.

You did not specify which part of the 'newer' computers you were trying to access so I will assume it's the entire C: drive. Did you set the correct permissions on the security tab (when you click into the Properties of the C: drive)? For testing add 'Everyone'. Also, make sure that the drive is actually sharable (also in the Properties).

To clarify - I was trying to share only 2 folders on the hard drive of the Latitude I just bought with the same type of folders on 3 other Dell computers (2 Inspiron laptops and 1 Dimension desktop, all of which were sharing nicely). I did not try to share the entire c drive.   What worked (so far) was to turn on 'simple file sharing' on the Latitude, then to remove sharing from its properties and to do sharing all over again.   I was following some trouble shooter in the help/support part of Windows which told me to rename my computer. I did that and all works on that name. But the old name shows up as another computer on the network. I have to figure out how to remove that 2nd one. And I am hoping this same method works when I get to my other home where nothing likes to share though all are getting internet access just fine.   Thanks to all on the forum for posting hints in various places where others had a network problem too. I appreciate having a place to read how others have solved problems.

I should have asked before but are these all on the same Workgroup? Another thing is in the Windows firewall exceptions check File and Printer sharing. Let us know!

Same workgroups, different network schemes...a lot  could be going on here.   All XPSP2?

All are XP SP2 but some are XP pro and others XP home.   All are on same workgroup. All had file and printer sharing chosen.   Also, when I switched to simple file sharing, it didn't work until I 'un-shared' the folders and then turned on sharing again. I never thought of that when I had trouble in my southern home.   I do not use Windows firewall and checked that each time I tried to troubleshoot. I use zonealarm and turned it off when troubleshooting.   So it seems that my problem, at least up here, was solved by turning on simple file sharing and then removing sharing before restoring it. I had turned off simple file sharing in XP pro since it was not visible in XP home so I thought it shouldn't be used in XP pro - wrong!   In my NJ house, I have it all working now. In a month I'll try 'simple file sharing' wherever possible on the computers down south.
