no offense, but it's like 30 posts long.  how about you re-explain the problems you're having in as much detail as you can and say what you've tried to do to fix it.

ok.  i apologize.

i have a dell inspiron 6000d ,  i use a dell hub 2350 , intelpro wireless 2915.

all bought in '05.  my wireless network does not stay connected.  the first person that was helping me had me update my drivers and disconnect allowing windows to manage the connection.  now, although i still have both windows and intel icons in my tray, it seems that the intelproset is managing it....................but to no avail.  it is still not holding the connection.  in my 'list of wireless networks', there is only 1 secured with my name.  the other 3 are unsecured and i wouldn't want to connect to them.  the 1 that has my name will NOT stay connected!  that';s the problem in a nutshell.  i'm sorry i'm not more technically oriented, but if you need any more info, i will certainly try to get it to you.

please advise soonest and thank you for your help.

In addition to Nem's suggestion, please tell us if  you have done any troubleshooting to determine if the problem is with the router or with the computer.  For example, do you have any other computers that can successfully connect to this particular router.   Can your computer connect to routers at public hotspots or some other location?

that depends entirely on what brand and model of wireless router you have

yes, it was all true, so i installed the patch and rebooted.  as of right now, i'm connected.  do you think that's all that was needed?  is there something else i should be doing to correct this?  if it goes down again, can i contact you?

thank you for all of your quick responses....i really appreciate it.

feel free to post back if the problem returns.

my next idea would be to look at your router and see if the software on it can be upgraded.

i'm going to assume you have XP installed (as opposed to vista).  i'm also going to assume that you've installed SP2 (service pack 2).  you can right-click my computer and then click properties to check.

if the above is true, try installing this patch from microsoft:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357

and the wireless connection has again switched off of mine and onto one of the none security enabled ones on the short list of networks.  :smileymad:

ok. i seem to now be back where i started from.....i have my network connected, but when i was following directions from my.router.com, when it came to save and restart, it never did restart, but the security enabled was on my list after doing that.

do you think i need to reset the router?  if so, can you walk me through all of that?

XP will not connect to other (unsecured) networks unless you have previously told it to do so.  right-click the wireless network icon and click properties.

Click the wireless network tab at the top.

There should be a preferred network list.  Remove all networks but yours.  See if that solves the problem.

i'm actually not at all familar with dell routers (which is why i asked about brand and models).  a basic reset can usually be accomplished through the router's webGUI or by simply unplugging it.  a more in depth reset (to clear all settings and restore factory defaults) can usually be done by pressing in a reset button on the router for a set amount of seconds (use care if you do this cause you will need to reset up your network).

you would still need to remove the other networks from your windows preferred network list, as I suggested previously
