Problem with DSL and network card/connection
i have a 3 year old dimension 2350 and have recently been having lots of trouble getting online with earthlink dsl after over a year of service with no problems. after one extended troubleshooting session with earthlink the tecnician said that the network card on my pc had gone bad. so is it now just a matter of buying a 10/100 network card and installing it in one of the available pci slots on the pc and then plugging the modem into the new ethernet plug?
also in looking at compusa at the network cards i saw some 10/100/1000 ethernet adapters. are ethernet adapters and network cards the same thing, and is the 10/100/1000 usable on my computer? any help appreciated.

An ethernet adapter is a type of network card and is the type you need for your dsl. The 10/100/1000 cards are capable of running at speeds of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, and 1000 Mbps. They will work on your system with the dsl modem, but they are overkill, since you dsl service will not allow speeds much higher than about 4 Mbps. Thus, there is no need to spend the extra money for a 10/100/1000 card if the 10/100 card is cheaper. I've seen 10/100 cards on sale for less than $10 after rebate.

if the factory network card has indeed gone bad do i need to remove it or anything? You really don't need to remove it, as it should not interfere, but if you don't want it to show up in Device Manager or Network Connections, you can go into the BIOS setup program and disable it there.
