To help troubleshoot this problem, on the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type
cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type
ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.
I thought we were trying to diagnose a problem with the connection to the router. You ran the ipconfig command while the computer was connected to the cable modem, and all it shows is that you are sucessfully connecting to the cable modem.
When you change the connection between a cable modem and another device, note that you must ALWAYS do a complete reset of the network (are you doing this?). If not, make sure you that you turn everything off, wait 5 minutes, turn on the cable modem first and wait another few minutes, then turn on the device that is directly connected to the cable modem.
If you haven't been doing this, it may explain why you are having a problem. In any event, if the problem is not solved by doing this, do the reset again, connect the router to the modem, and then run the ipconfig command again while you are trying to connect by wireless to the router. Post the results.
That did it. The reset info is certainly not evident in the instructions for setting up a wireless network. Thanks for your help. I ended up using the new router (Dlink) and the network magic software that came with it. After the router was recognized by the computer the software was very good in getting me online, security settings, sharing etc.
Again thanks for your help. Still cannot figure out where system went haywire. Only event that ocurred was a windows update during the night hours.
