problem with wireless connection on dell 600m

Question

Hi, i recently changed hard drive and upgraded RAM to 2 GB on my Dell 600m. I installed windows XP Pro and trying to set up drivers etc. on my new installation of windows XP Pro. I have Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Installed in my laptop and i downloaded latest drivers from intel website as well as dell website and installed drivers as well as utilities. I use Netgear wireless Router MR814 which supports 802.11B Band ( pretty old ) My wireless card can see all wireless connections but when i try to connect to my wireless connection ( it is secure and i entered KEY properly ) , it does not connect. I have my work laptop, my desktop all connecting wirelessly fine with router I also upgraded firmware on my router few minutes ago. My Dell 600m laptop which i upgraded was connecting to wireless network fine before when it was running on pre loaded softwares ( windows xp home and other stuff dell installs ) which came installed from Dell. I do not know why it is not connecting now when i installed windows xp pro and installed all latest drivers. It connects fine through LAN wire from the same router but not wirelessly regards, crazy_jutt

Assuming you installed the drivers in the correct order and Windows does in fact see your wireless network adapter, it sounds like you are either not telling it to use the correct encryption type or not entering the exact correct key.   One way to troubleshoot this is to temporarily disable encryption on the router and see if it works.  If it does, then you know it is a problem with the encryption type or key.   Steve

Yes, I taken out WEP encryption and it connected fine I put back WEP encryption and entered Key back into connection settings and verified my wireless connection settings with my work laptop and they exactly match My work laptop connects fine but 600m still do not connect

Maybe it's time for a new router.  Have you tried upgrading the firmware on the existing router?   Steve

I have upgraded router firware yesterday I should not have to buy new router just because I installed windows xp pro on my laptop. My wireless card in dell 600m supports all A,B,G wireless protocols. I have all latest drivers from intel website.

Hi,   Just verifying if you have ensured you arent using passphrase instead of the actual HEX or ASCII key for WEP. Some routers support the concept of passphrase for WEP where users might have to generate a HEX Equivalent WEP Code. Also note, some wireless cards support direct usage of passphrase which might be a reason that the other system still works.   Regards Chris

Thanks everyone i tried everything. nothing worked I bought new router linksys WRT54G and everything works fine i have no idea what was wrong and my old router did not have support for WPA and no 802.11g it works now after spending 50 extra dollars not to forget another 200 i spent on buying other stuff while i was in microcenter
