Problems getting Modem to respond

Hi I purchased a used Dell That was preloaded with XP Pro. The modem driver does not appear to be on the laptop. Also when I check the system it does not even see the modem in my computer spec's.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this problem would be nice. I have included the computer spec's below.

Thanks

Rick

Hi,

Your computer should have a modem. To check, look under the door in the base. It is a small card held in with 2 screws. There are 2 mem sockets and a socket for a wireless net. also. If it has failed, it may have been taken out. There should also be a lable on the base to say what brand. I would expect a PCTel p/n OE828 as they were common in that model. If the modem is there and cant be seen by the OS, it may be faulty.

Thanks for the reply AussieChris,

Yes the modem is there,

PcTell DP/N 0E828

The wireless socket is empty,
and only 1 256k mem card is present.

Where would be the best place to get the modem,
wireless card & another 256 k ram card?

Thanks again for your reply.

Rick

Hi,

You can try Dell, Parts-people or Ebay. Even Google and see. Does the Audio work ? that often stops with a bad modem.

Yes the Audio works.
The cd works fine. And plays as well.

But all the tests I run on the laptop
shows the modem does not exist. This is
understandable since the XP Pro OS was
installed while the modem was dead I beleave.

Anyway I think 50 bucks or so will make sure
it is the problem or not...

Thanks again

Rick
