Problems with getting online, shows connection but Internet Explorer, ect. won't work

Which Inspiron model are you running? What operating system are you running? What devices are the wireless and ethernet connections? You said "I'm also able to ping succesfully", but you also said "i am unable to view websites on Explorer or use the internet in any other way". If you can ping successfully, there's at least something working.

The release/renew results suggest that at least one of the two interfaces isn't getting an IP address from a DHCP server. What is your connection to the Internet (DSL, Cable, dialup)? Do you have a router? If so, what is its manufacturer and model number?

Can you post the output of ipconfig /all, so we can see what interfaces Windows thinks are present and active?

Lots of details...getting networks configured right involves lots of details!

I'm running an Ispirioin 5100. I'm at college so i'm running off whatever connection type they have w/ their router. I know my port for my eternet works because i've connected with other computers through it, so it's a setting in my computer somewhere, not the actual network. I'll work on posting my ipconfig on here, but since i'm not currently on my computer it mite take me a little while.

I had the same problem recently, and I'm in the same predicament, I'm running an Inspiron 5100 with XP home and when i contacted the IT services on my campus.. they directed me to what seemed an extremely helpful Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

However, these did not solve my problem, and it has gradually warped (while i have tried various solutions from Microsoft, and I have reinstalled XP) into an error with the IPCONFIG command which displays the following text:

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error ocurred: The system cannot find the file specified.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unable to query host name.

 

I would suggest trying the solutions in the KB articles and seeing if that works.. if not.... then keep posting!

P.S.----The only other thing I want to know is if you recently downloaded and used and uninstalled McAfee Personal Firewall... This is apparently one cause of the corruption of the Winsock2 and TCP/IP settings that leads to your error message.

There is another KB article that pertains to this issue. I'm going to try the solution therein and I'll get back to you on this.

P.S.S.---- BTW, if anyone would like to help me with that new error message i'm recieving (see above, Re: IPCONFIG error) pleeeeeeeease feel free to give some advice .
