Questions about satellite internet

I only have a single computer, but I noticed in the Search that this board had quite a few returns about internet via satellite. My dial-up usually ranks about 16.8 to 21.6 kbps and cannot be remedied. I have been researching the hughesnet site and boards for opinions about satellite internet. I am running a Dimension 2350 with original hardware, a few extra programs and I don't game online.

Can anyone tell me what they like or dislike about satellite internet? I always unplug all electronics during storms, so blackouts are not a concern.

Thank you for your input.

meccatx,

If you are familiar with the vagaries of satellite TV, such as outages during heavy rain and storms, heavy snow (or heavy latent snow on the dish itself), and can live with those then satellite internet works just fine.  Because the signal has to travel 22k miles up and back down before it actually hits the internet there is a noticeable delay.  Be sure you understand the Fair Access Policy.  The current satellite systems have ethernet connectivity, so if you grow beyond one computer you can use a router to share the satellite internet connection.

Take a look at the  satellite forum at BroadBandReports.com.  Lots of good stuff there.  The links under the "Forum Links" on the left side are always helpful.
