RE: Wake on LAN
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if any of the following DELL models we own support the Wake on LAN feature:
Dell Dimension XPS 800
Dell Dimension XPS 800r
Dell Dimension 4100
Dell Dimension 8300
If they do, I have not been able to make them work using their built in NIC.
I know that if I want to use a PCI NIC I need one that is a PCI 2.2-complaiant.
I want to be able to use the one that came built in the system.
Can you please let me know as what else need to be setup besides turning the feature ON on the BIOS.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Before attempting to wake the system, ensure that it has been powered down from within Windows. Forcing a powerdown of the system using the power button will result in the system being placed in a state that will not allow Wake On LAN functionality. Also, powering the system off via a surge supressor of any kind will blank the WoL state, and will not allow the system to respond to a WoL request once power is restored.
Ensure that your WoL software on your server or host system is set to send a Magic Packet, and that the MAC address of the network card within the target system is properly entered.
- Dell Dimension XPS 800
I assume that you mean the Dimension XPS T800 system. In this case, this system is PCI 2.1-compliant, and require a network card that has a Wake On LAN flea power wire connected to the Wake On LAN header on the motherboard (which is item 17 in this diagram).
- Dell Dimension XPS 800r
I assume that you mean the Dimension XPS B800r system. If that is the case, this system does feature PCI 2.2 compliance. This system also features a legacy Wake On LAN power header connector (labeled item 12 in this diagram), in case an installed PCI network card is only PCI 2.1-compliant.
- Dell Dimension 4100
This system is PCI 2.2-compliant, and does not feature a legacy WoL power header on the system board. The integrated NIC option on this system features Wake On LAN.
- Dell Dimension 8300
The integrated NIC option on this system features Wake On LAN.
