reboot 1184

I don't have an 1184, but most routers have a manual reset switch that will reset the router back to the factory default settings.  You will probably find it in the back - a small, recessed push-button that can only be depressed with a straightened out paper clip or something similar.  Press the reset button in and hold it for 5-10 seconds.

I did,

Rebooted the 1184 but to my sad surprise still no connection to the router.

All I did was activated the encription code 64-bit and filled in a 5 digit code in key 1 and pushed save & restore.

Then connection was lost and I can't reactivate it.

Anybody any good ideas?

Well, first make sure you are following the restart/reset instructions exactly.  It does say unplug and then plug in (I'd wait a few minutes in between).  Then press the reset button for the 5 seconds.  When you do all this, does the power light blink?

Can you get access to the router via a wired connection?  Perhaps the router has a reset function in its web configuration.

As a last resort, I'd set everything back to the way it was and hope for the best.

Sigh, 1184s.  You can't live with 'em and you can't live without 'em.

Having reviewed the sequence of events do you have any idea why I'm not able to connect to my router?

Should I change some of my settings in my mini pci card 1180?

I followed the instructions exactly. First power plug out for 2 minutes then reset button for at least 5 seconds and blinking of the power light.

No result.

The router does have a restore default setting in the router menu but I can't get in the router configuration as I don't have connection.

How do connect the router wired? I already plugged in a cable between a LAN ouput (number 4) in the router and the input in the Inspiron 8200 but the 1184 software does not see a connection.

What am I doing wrong?

Don't know what to say,  It's supposed to work - see this.

Check to make sure the adapter has not been disabled in either Network Connections or Device Manager.

Check to see what IP address the internel ethernet adapter is getting using ipconfig /all.  Hopefully it is getting one from the router in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx.  If the address is not in this range then unplug the router and shutdown the PC.  Plug the router and then turn on the PC.  Check the IP address again.  Once you get a 192.168.xxx.xxx address from the router, use Internet Explorer to go to http://192.168.2.1.  You may have to disable the wireless adapter in the laptop to do this.

There must be some address in the ipconfig output.  Is it 0.0.0.0? 

Is the PC you are using to connect to the router the same one you are using to connect directly to the modem?

I've hooked up a direct connection between router and PC but in ipconfig /all it doesn't recognise this connection and therefore doesn't provide an IP address.

This explains why the 1184 software doesn't recognise the router because there is apparently no connection. Strange though because i've hooked up a direct cable between router and laptop.

I'm getting more frustrated by the minute.

There is no ip address in the ipconfig; it states that the ethernet port is not connected and does not provide an address.

The PC I am using is the same for the router and the modem.

Argh, brain fade on my part.  My last question was a dumb one.  Of course the adapter is functioning if you are using it when directly attached.

So I assume you have a "Network cable unplugged" message in Network Connections when cabled to the router - which means WinXP does not see a physical connection to the router.  Try a different LAN port on the router - LAN1.

I'm not quite sure how to check this but in Network connections in indicates it is working fine. This makes sense because the same input I use for the internet connection directly right now.

I was thinking, all misery started when I tried to encryp the router. Maybe if I encrypt the laptop identically (the 1180  pci card) then could they reconnect?

I don't know how this works.

The password request is coming from the installation CD-rom which I ran to check te connection between LAN1 and laptop. After it confirmes the connection between LAN1 from 1184 and laptop is asks for username and password to configure te connection between LAN1 and router. For username I use admin and password I use nothing and then I get through in the set up menu. However this setup menu only allows for input of the ISP connection  and installs the 1184 system utility. After completing the setup I run the system 1184 utility to restore all default settings but I don't get to the configuring menu.

So in short: I am communicating with the 1184 via LAN1 but can't change the settings!

Still no breakthrough.

I'm a little confused.  Where is this password request coming from? The browser based utility or the 1184 control utility?

If it is from the browser based utility then you are at least communicating with the 1184.  Try different permutations of username and password.  So many resets have been done that maybe username and/or password are not required.  I know that Linksys routers use admin as the password and there is no username. 

If the password request request is coming from the 1184 control utility, try different combinations there as well.
