reformatted HD, no connection, no IP

please could someone help me with this problem? i am doing cold turkey without the net ;-)

connected through modem to PC by ethernet

in Network Connection i tried repairing and a message came up: failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection

uninstalled and re installed 1394 Net Adapter (shows as enabled)

the DELL 600 Resource CD didnt find modem diagnostics or modem driver

i downloaded and installed the newest version of Intel 537E v.9x,PCI,modem

green light is showing at back of PC when ethernet cable is plugged into network card

ive tried to set up with wizard and no joy there either

ive shut down PC and modem, kicked up modem 1st then PC
