Reformatting Inspiron 6000

Is it a built-in adapter, or a addon card?

After reformatting and reinstalling Windows, did you install the chipset drivers as the first drivers installed and before attempting to install drivers for any other device.  Without the presence of the chipset drivers, Windows cannot recognize nor install drivers for many devices.   The chipset drivers must be installed first.

Sometimes it works to uninstall devices that were installed before the chipset drivers were installed, then install the chipset drivers, and then try to reinstall the other devices.   Sometimes this doesn't work and one needs to start all over, reformatting, reinstalling Windows, then installing the chipset drivers as the first device drivers installed, followed by the drivers for all other devices.

Using a separate computer and internet connection what I did was to put the drivers I am going to need onto a CD-R and that makes it very convenient. I put each (which is just an R plus number) into a folder explaining what it is (ChipSet, Ethernet, Audio, Video, that sort of thing). It helps my brain.

The 1394 adapter is your firewire port and is not normally used in networking (although Windows considers it a network device).  The broadcom device it your ethernet network adapter.   Neither of these have anything to do with wireless network.  It sounds like you need to install the drivers for your wireless network adapter.   To do that you need to know which wireless network adapter is physically installed.  It will either be a Dell device or an Intel Device.  If you have your original invoice, it should tell you there.  Alternatively, you might be able to figure it by going to the following site, entering your Service Tag number and clicking on the Original Configuration tab.

Look in the "tray" (bottom row of the screen, lower right) for an icon that looks like radio waves (like a backwards "C" nested).

What I do is RIGHT-click on that icon and say "Show available wireless networks"

With a wireless access point showing, select one with strong(est) signal and the click "Connect"
