Reinstalled OS, need correct drivers and instructions for installation
Hello, I have looked through the forums and seen things in and around this subject and researched those, but ultimately it seems like each issue is unique and so here is mine:
I reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my Inspiron 8600. No service packs installed.
There is no wireless network adapter. I can not access the internet on my verizon fios home network. This computer was previously on that network.
Checking device manager, there are no drivers for Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Network Controller, PCI Modem, USB Controller, and Video Controller, after reinstall of OS.
Using the System Configuration Tool and the Service Tag number, I checked for hardware configuration. I have posted the results below. I do not understand how to use this information to figure out what drivers I need.
In the drivers and downloads section, the drivers don't easily match up to the drivers mentioned above.
Which drivers do I need, and what order do they need to be installed? Thank you for any help.

These should get you going, then download and run "Unknown Device Identifier" to find more system info.

Dave, thanks for the reply.
I downloaded and tried to install the Notebook system software. During the Preparing Setup routine the install stops and I get a message:
"This computer does not support this operating system."
I have repeated the process with the same result.
Any ideas?

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:
You can't expect forum members to root through a long list like that, to pick out the relevant information :emotion-3:
All we needed to know was the model of system you have - which would appear to be an Inspiron 8600 laptop, and the OS you're using - XP.
After you've installed the OS, use the discs you should've received with the system to install the necessary drivers - in the order advised in the link Dave provided.
But you should then go to the 'Drivers & Downloads' page for your system on the Dell website (a link to which you'll find at the bottom of this page), and download/install the latest drivers - particularly chipset, network, graphics, and audio.
Finally... install XP SP3, and all the WIndows Updates available :emotion-5:

Thanks. I don't expect anything, but appreciate the help. In other support forums it's encouraged to post detailed information, for example a hijackthis report. I saw other forum members ask for results from the hardward config file so I posted mine pre-emptively.. Maybe that's not good form in this forum...lesson learned.
Update: I installed sp2 and that resolved the "operating system not compatible with this computer" error. Installed the drivers above, not from disk, and all seems to be working fine. however, I'm now trying to figure out what USB driver I need. I tried to install "Unknown Device Identifier" and got an I/0 105 error...multiple times. rrgggg.

It's not that we don't need to know information.
But we certainly don't need to know things like all the "Service Charge" items you included, or completely irrelevant stuff such as "Cover, Screw, Plastic", "Screw, M2X3, K", "Assembly, Bezel", the ISP software you got with it, etc etc.
The important information is all that's required - which at the very least should be the model of the system (i.e. XPS M1730 laptop), and the OS you're using (XP Pro/Vista 32bit/64bit).
In some instances however (it depends on the help required), it's helpful to know additional info, such as the graphics card, amount of RAM, hard drive capacity, wireless card etc.
In a very few cases (again depending on the nature of the problem), we might need to know all the main hardware components in the system - such as seen in my sig :emotion-5:
Why SP2 - rather than SP3?
As for the USB driver error: The chipset drivers should/should've taken care of USB, firewire etc?
Do you have any external peripherals attached? Have you installed the drivers for them - if they need them?
Have you tried right-clicking on the unknown device, selecting 'Drivers --> Update driver software --> Search automatically for updated driver software'?

You wouldn't happen to be able to provide this list for an Inspiron 8500 would you?
I did much the same thing...reinstalled XP fresh but I've already downloaded and installed up to SP3. Was weird because the wireless card/access worked just fine until SP3 was installed.
I seem to be missing only the ethernet and video driver. I was thinking to start over with XP, install the original drivers ( I guess, cos I don't think I have them) and then do the service packs and upgrade the drivers then if necessary.
The Dell site is kinda confusing about what one really needs.
I appreciate any knowlege you can pass along about this.
